ELD: Transport Topics Webinar

About a week ago Transport Topics presented a “live on the web” ELD webinar. They had big fleets represented there, talking about their real world experience with Electronic Logs. Here are my top three takeaways:

  1. This is about Compliance – not Safety. An ELD can force a driver to stop for his 10 hour break, but it cannot force him to REST on that break. Now that every moment is going to be clocked, brokers, shippers, and dispatchers are all going to be faced with facts about how long deliveries take, and they will have to help each other get more efficient to stay compliant and competitive.
  2. Vendors of ELDs will Self-CertifyBuyer Beware! Trust but Verify! These are going to be the rules of the road when choosing an ELD. Vendors will certify themselves through an online application available here and 3 vendors are already approved. See the list here and remember, “these devices are self-certified by the manufacture and not by the FMCSA.” It’s going to be extremely important that we all investigate our vendors independently so that we know they will meet our needs.
  3. Don’t Wait!! Get your customers on board today! There’s been a lot of fear within the industry that this technology would be rejected by drivers but that’s not happening! Diver acceptance of Electronic Logs over paper logs is high! So don’t wait until the deadline to get your customers on board! The world as we knew it is changing. The old fashioned, paper processes are already obsolete. We can help you make your owner-operators ELD and IFTA compliant today, while also helping you harness the digital data to make your job easier.
